Michael, Nick, and Steven are three buddies from the steel mill town of Clairton, Penn.They work together, hang out in a local bar and enjoying weekends deer hunting Ina a larger group with three other friends. But their placid life is soon to be changed after the three buddies enlist in the airborne infantry to go to Vietnam. So they all celebrate a goodbye at Steven's wedding and they leave for Vietnam. They are captured by the enemy and forced to play games of Russian Roulette to amuse their guards. They escape and Mike returns home to find Nick has stayed in Vietnam and Steven is handicapped after losing his legs and the use of one arm after the escape. Mike finds that deer hunting has changed for him after Vietnam and he returns to Vietnam during the fall to attempt to rescue Nick

Somebody asked me, What's the longest wedding you've ever been to? And I said, You ever watched a movie called The Deer Hunter. The Deer to read. I cry watching John Wayne last appearance. I love this scene, so much of the meaning of the film is right here. Michael is the alpha male, Nick is the sweet, sensitive one. One shot is the link to their final moment together later in the film. These two men love each other and that relationship is central to the story.

The music, the story, and the message are phenomenal in Hjartarbaninn. One of the greatest films I've ever seen. not the most enjoyable, but definitely in the top 5-10 easily in punching me right in the gut. But this trailer is absolute trash. A favorite film and favorite actors. One of my favorite Martin Scorsese movie.

Anyway no war-movie has been more poignant and shocking than this one and not only thanks to the performances of Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken but above all for the magniloquent and passionate direction of Michael Cimino, who concentrate the narration on the sense of inevitability of loss and does it through unforgettable sequences (the wedding, the Russian roulette) which render the movie extraordinarily exciting. To be brief, one of the best and most important movie of ever.

It's too bad that more viewers, who watched the movie, didn't understand the true moral of the story. It had little to do with the Vietnam war or the traumatic experience that people go through. This film is without doubt #2 on my list of all time greats (Schindlers List being #1. Robert De Niro is in top form as is Christopher Walken in his Oscar winning performance.
The film follows three steel working friends from the hunting grounds, to Vietnam and back again. The scene when they are captured and forced to play russian roulette are the most graphic scenes ever filmed. This film is not about the war in Vietnam, but about the aftermath of the conflict. Notes:This was John Cazale's last movie. Meryl Streep's Oscar Nominated Performance. De Niro being robbed of the Best Actor Oscar. Walken in the performance of his career.
